Hossam Hassan, the coach of Egypt's national football team, has decided to divorce his first wife, Al-Waida Al-Garbawi, following a violent altercation between his two wives at a resort on Egypt's North Coast. The incident, which took place at a restaurant in Porto Marina, escalated from a loud verbal argument to a physical fight involving hair-pulling and hot coffee being spilled in front of onlookers. Hassan, who was present and attempted to intervene, collapsed from emotional shock and was hospitalized for treatment.

The public scandal was widely circulated on social media and sparked ongoing media attention in Egypt. In response, Hassan chose to end his first marriage. Al-Garbawi requested privacy regarding the details, emphasizing that "household secrets will remain inside the home" even after the divorce.

This personal turmoil comes at a sensitive time for Hassan, who recently led Egypt to the Round of 32 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and had his coaching contract extended by the Egyptian Football Association. Notably, during the World Cup, Hassan drew controversy for raising a Palestinian flag after Egypt's qualification and reacting angrily when an Israeli fan displayed an Israeli flag during a match against Argentina.
