Pro-Israel Attacker Targets Reform Synagogue Worshippers in New York Amid Political Tensions
Larry Montes, 46, was arrested after assaulting a worshipper and a security guard at the Central Synagogue in New York. Montes, who is not Jewish, holds pro-Israel views and is a vocal critic of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. According to the Jewish-American newspaper The Forward, Montes's attack was motivated by his opposition to Reform Judaism, leading him to shout at congregants that they were "fake Jews."
Montes has posted social media videos criticizing Mayor Adams, even comparing him to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini. He also praised evangelical Christians who support Israel and urged others to "keep Israel in your heart." The assault occurred on a Friday evening at one of New York's largest and most prominent synagogues, sparking widespread condemnation. Many linked the attack to Mayor Adams's critical stance on Israel.
Israeli Consul in New York, Ofir Akunis, condemned the attack on social media, stating it was a direct result of Mayor Adams's incitement. Video footage from the scene shows Montes becoming agitated and shouting, striking a worshipper before being restrained, then spitting on and headbutting the arriving security guard.
