Japan and the Netherlands Draw 2-2 in World Cup Opener
Japan and the Netherlands opened their 2026 World Cup campaigns with a lively 2-2 draw overnight Sunday to Monday in Arlington, in the first round of Group F. After a cautious first half, the match exploded after the break and ended with both teams taking a point, but also showing they can contend deep into the tournament.
The Dutch went ahead in the 51st minute when Virgil van Dijk rose for a corner and headed in. Japan responded quickly, as Kaito Nakamura finished a precise attack to make it 1-1 in the 57th minute. Seven minutes later, the Netherlands reclaimed the lead through Crisencio Somerville, who scored after an impressive solo move.
Japan refused to fold and equalized in the 89th minute, when Daichi Kamada met the ball in the box and headed home the dramatic 2-2 goal. For Japan, the result adds encouragement after a successful build-up period that included wins over England and Scotland. The Netherlands were left disappointed after losing a second-half advantage despite long stretches in which they were the better side.
Japan will face Tunisia in the next round, while the Netherlands meet Sweden in a game that could prove important in the race for first place in the group.
