Israeli Family Welcomes Newborn Son Two Years After Fallen Soldier Yair Roitman
Two years after the death of their son, Staff Sergeant Yair Roitman, who was fatally wounded in combat in Rafah, his parents Riki and Eitan Roitman have welcomed a new baby boy into their family. At age 47, Riki gave birth to a son who will grow up alongside the legacy and memory of his older brother. Despite the enduring grief, the couple chose to expand their family as a symbol of continuity, resilience, and national responsibility.
Yair Roitman, the second of six siblings, enlisted in the IDF’s Givati Brigade in August 2023 and fought during the Iron Swords conflict. On June 10, 2024, during an operational mission in the Shabora area of Rafah, a powerful explosive device detonated in the building where his unit was operating. Four soldiers died instantly, and Yair was critically injured. After five days of fighting for his life, he passed away at just 19 years old.
Following his death, testimonies revealed Yair’s bravery, including an account from his close friend Neveh Maimoni, who said Yair shielded him with his body during the blast, saving his life. This story has become a core part of the family’s remembrance of Yair’s courage and sacrifice.
The Roitman family, active in the Forum of Heroism which unites bereaved families of fallen soldiers, emphasizes the importance of national resilience and the heavy price paid by many Israeli families. They stress the need to prevent future losses and reflect on the meaning of victory after such sacrifices. The newborn son will grow up surrounded by Yair’s memory, stories, and values, as his parents continue to live with the pain while choosing to add life and hope to their home.
