US Sends Envoys to Revive Israel-Hamas Deal Amid Regional Agreement Collapse

The United States is making a concerted effort to revive the faltering agreement between Israel and Hamas, brokered with American mediation. President Donald Trump has dispatched two envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, along with Tony Blair, a senior member of the peace council, on a diplomatic tour in the Middle East. This week, they are scheduled to visit Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials. Their mission is to de-escalate tensions and prevent the collapse of the "Roadmap" peace plan, particularly its second phase which involves Hamas disarming.

Following their meetings in Israel, the delegation plans to continue to Egypt for discussions with other mediating countries. Meanwhile, Nikolay Mladenov, the head of the peace council, informed mediators that Israel's opposition to advancing the plan stems from its preparations for upcoming elections. Mladenov noted that President Trump intends to implement the plan "when the appropriate conditions are met," implying after the elections and the formation of a new government.

Western diplomatic sources cited by the Saudi channel Al-Sharq and Israel's Kan News indicate that Washington understands Netanyahu's wish to delay action until after the elections but insists on guarantees to reduce escalation and limit attacks. This demand reflects concerns that ongoing conflict could cause the complete collapse of the agreement. Trump's attempt to revive the Israel-Hamas deal occurs amid the simultaneous breakdown of another Middle East agreement he signed with Iran, signaling a series of setbacks for his regional initiatives.
