Israeli Economy Surges Post-War but Relies Heavily on One Company

Israel's economy experienced a significant rebound in the second quarter of 2026, with gross domestic product (GDP) soaring by 15.4% on an annualized basis, according to preliminary data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) released on August 16. This sharp growth reflects recovery from the economic disruptions caused by Operation "Roaring Lion," which extended into mid-April. Key economic components showed strong increases: private consumption rose by 14.7%, government spending by 19.5%, fixed asset investments by 6.3%, and exports of goods and services (excluding startups and diamonds) jumped 25.2%.

However, the overall picture for the first half of 2026 is more moderate, with GDP growth at only 3.2% compared to the second half of 2025. Analysts caution that the initial quarterly estimate may be overly optimistic, as the first quarter's growth figure was significantly revised downward after including the war period. A critical factor behind the robust numbers is the outsized impact of production abroad by a single company, Nvidia, which manufactures goods overseas based on technology acquired from the Israeli company Mellanox. When excluding Nvidia's foreign production, the half-year growth rate falls sharply from 3.2% to just 1%. Despite the production occurring outside Israel, Nvidia's activities still generate local development jobs and tax revenues.

Looking ahead, the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Israel forecast a 4% economic growth for 2026, while the OECD projects a more conservative 3.3%. Experts emphasize that one strong quarter does not alter the overall annual outlook, which remains cautious given the lingering effects of the conflict with Iran and the economy's dependence on a single major player. The CBS notes that these figures are preliminary and based on partial data, suggesting further revisions may follow.
