Critics Say Trump’s Middle East Policies Weakened Israel and Empowered Iran
Retired General Yitzhak Brik sharply criticizes former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Middle East strategy, arguing that despite projecting an image of strength, Trump repeatedly failed in key areas. Brik contends that Trump’s unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal without an international backup plan allowed Iran to accelerate its military nuclear enrichment unchecked, turning it into a near-nuclear state and leaving the world vulnerable to unprecedented threats.
Brik highlights that Trump’s chaotic approach to regional conflicts, marked by contradictory actions such as sudden strikes alongside rushed deals, increased instability in the Middle East and raised the risk of broader regional wars or even a third world war. He accuses Trump of prioritizing domestic political and business interests over Israel’s security, leaving Israel isolated amid deteriorating security conditions.
The former general also points to Trump’s support for Turkey despite its hostile policies toward Israel and destabilizing actions in NATO and the region, illustrating Trump’s willingness to sacrifice traditional alliances for personal rapport with authoritarian leaders. Crucially, Brik notes that Trump’s negotiations with Iran ignored the ballistic missile program threatening Israel and allowed Iran to maintain nuclear infrastructure and proxy networks across the Middle East.
Brik argues that Trump’s main motivation was securing U.S. economic and energy interests by controlling the Strait of Hormuz, rather than genuinely countering Iranian terrorism or protecting Israel. This approach sidelined Israel’s security needs and sovereignty, treating it as a passive observer rather than a key partner. Ultimately, Brik describes Trump’s policy as a fragile house of cards built on empty rhetoric, which weakened Israel’s security, empowered radical Iran, strengthened Turkey and its allies, and left the Middle East more vulnerable than before Trump’s presidency.
He warns that history will judge Trump’s transactional and populist approach as having dangerously destabilized the region and global security.
