Yossi the Elephant Celebrates 52nd Birthday at Israeli Safari

Yossi, the famous African elephant at the Israeli Safari, recently celebrated his 52nd birthday, marking a significant milestone for the oldest and heaviest elephant in any zoo worldwide. Hila Feldman, the safari's spokesperson, highlighted Yossi's exceptional longevity compared to wild elephants, attributing it to the safe, predator-free environment and abundant healthy food provided at the safari. Weighing around seven tons, Yossi enjoys a diet rich in vegetables, especially carrots.

Feldman emphasized the intelligence and sensitivity of elephants, sharing a remarkable story about the deep trust between Yossi and his caretakers. When a tire got stuck on Yossi's trunk, the department manager, Guy, carefully sawed it off without anesthesia, demonstrating their strong bond. Feldman also urged the public to avoid riding elephants abroad, particularly in Thailand, where elephants often endure harsh treatment to be tamed.

She invited visitors to come to the safari, especially after its recent closure due to wartime conditions, stressing the importance of public support for animal welfare and species conservation. Feldman described the safari as a "seven-star hotel" for elephants, providing a secure and nurturing environment for Yossi and other animals.
