Lawyer Reveals Shocking Details Years After Ehud Olmert's Holiland Trial
Years after the Holiland trial involving former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Shula Zaken's lawyer, Ofer Bartal, gave a revealing interview on the Maariv podcast. Bartal described the shock experienced by the defense team when they first heard recordings of conversations between Olmert and Zaken, who was his longtime chief of staff since she was 16. Zaken eventually became a state witness, a difficult role despite immunity from imprisonment, as she was often viewed negatively despite aiding the court.
The recordings, central to the case, included discussions about funds held by lawyer Uri Messer and attempts by Olmert to influence Zaken's decision to testify. In 2014, after Zaken was brought from Neve Tirtza prison to testify at the Jerusalem District Court, parts of the transcripts were made public. The prosecution argued these conversations supported claims that Olmert misused funds for personal purposes and tried to deter Zaken from testifying. The prosecution viewed this as incriminating, while Olmert claimed it was part of a joint defense strategy. Other recordings discussed sums of money transferred to Zaken, including 25,000 shekels and 20,000 in cash, which the prosecution linked to misuse, but Olmert's allies described as legitimate support for Zaken's expenses.
