Israel faces a critical vulnerability in its digital infrastructure due to potential sabotage of undersea fiber optic cables, which are essential for the country's high-tech exports and global communications. These cables, spread across the seabed, serve as vital economic lifelines, and deliberate damage could severely disrupt Israel's connectivity and economy. While recent damages have been attributed mainly to accidental anchor drags and maritime disruptions linked to the Red Sea conflict, Western intelligence agencies suspect intentional attacks by Houthi rebels in Yemen, supported by Iran. The ongoing conflict complicates repair efforts, and threats from hostile actors persist.
The United States and Europe are actively deploying naval forces in the Red Sea to protect shipping lanes and communication routes from terrorist or state-sponsored sabotage. Israel, described as a "digital island," cannot afford to rely on a few regional chokepoints for data transit. Experts recommend accelerating projects to diversify cable landing points through alternative maritime routes and partnerships with Mediterranean allies such as Cyprus and Greece. Satellite communications, while important as a backup, cannot replace the massive bandwidth capacity of undersea cables. To deter and detect sabotage, Israel should employ advanced maritime sonar, autonomous underwater drones, and intelligence sharing to monitor suspicious vessels near its economic waters and cable routes.
