Ben Gurion Airport to Undergo Major Expansion with New Tunnels, Terminal, and Five-Star Hotel by 2030

Ben Gurion Airport is set for a comprehensive expansion project aimed at significantly improving passenger flow and capacity by 2030. The plan includes constructing new tunnels and a highway interchange under Route 1, which will shorten travel distances to the airport by 10 kilometers for travelers coming from Tel Aviv. This infrastructure upgrade involves two tunnels, bridges, and ramps to streamline access toward Jerusalem and Highway 6.

Terminal 3, the airport's main terminal opened in 2004, will be expanded in all directions to accommodate up to 40 million passengers annually. The expansion will add a new aircraft gate wing and 90 new check-in counters, increasing the total from 120. Upgrades will also include enhanced underground baggage handling systems and additional conveyor belts in the departures hall.

To address current congestion, the airport will double its parking capacity from 21,000 to 40,000 spaces and introduce the first five-star hotel on-site, featuring seven floors, 260 rooms, and a rooftop pool. Seating areas in the food court will also be doubled to better serve passengers during peak times. The airport authority plans to encourage online check-in and kiosk use to reduce wait times.

The expansion responds to increasing passenger volumes, with over 2.5 million travelers expected in August alone, causing delays of up to two hours at check-in. Sharon Kadmi, CEO of the Israel Airports Authority, attributed delays to operational challenges and staff shortages amid simultaneous arrivals and departures. The project aims to modernize Ben Gurion Airport and prepare it for future growth without passengers noticing major disruptions.

Overall, the upgrades represent one of Israel's largest infrastructure efforts, correcting decades-old planning issues and ensuring the airport can meet demand for the next 50 years.
