Paris Auction Puts Dinosaur-Inspired Luxury Handbag Up for Sale

A one-of-a-kind luxury handbag made from a bio-based material inspired by Tyrannosaurus rex is being auctioned at Drouot in Paris, with an estimated price of 300,000 to 500,000 euros. The turquoise bag, designed by the Polish studio Enfin Levé, is presented as a first-of-its-kind item linking scientific innovation, sustainability and high fashion.

The project was developed with biotech companies including Lab-Grown Leather and The Organoid Company, together with the international creative agency VML. According to the creators, scientists used fragments of ancient proteins found in T. rex fossils from Montana and AI-based models to reconstruct a likely collagen structure. That information was then inserted into living cells to produce collagen, which was processed into a leather-like material.

The team calls the result “T-Rex Leather,” saying it is structurally identical to natural leather, avoids harm to animals, is fully traceable along the supply chain and is biodegradable. But some scientists remain unconvinced, stressing that the material is engineered collagen “inspired” by the dinosaur, not something directly derived from prehistoric creatures, raising questions about how the product is being presented.

The handbag was first shown in April 2026 at the Art Zoo museum in Amsterdam, displayed alongside a giant T. rex skeleton, before being brought to Paris for the auction. The project has drawn interest from fashion fans and researchers alike, and its backers ultimately hope to turn “T-Rex Leather” into a commercial luxury material, with plans to market it to major fashion brands and later to other industries, including automotive.
