Dubai Launches Interest-Free Rent Payment Plan to Address Housing Crisis
Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, is set to introduce a new housing initiative next month aimed at alleviating the city's housing crisis. The program, called "Rent Now, Pay Later," will allow tenants to spread their annual rent payments over 12 months without interest. This approach, common in Israel, essentially functions as an interest-free loan facilitated by banks, enabling renters to pay landlords the full rent upfront while repaying the bank monthly over a year.
The initiative is designed to provide tenants with greater payment flexibility and improve housing accessibility. While Dubai has previously offered quarterly and semi-annual payment plans, this program could make it the first city globally to offer an interest-free mortgage-like option for rental payments. Rental prices in Dubai remain high, with the German real estate firm Engel & Völkers reporting average rents of approximately 5,800 shekels per month for three-bedroom apartments and nearly double that for four-bedroom units, especially in premium areas like Dubai Marina and Palm Jumeirah.
Despite being presented as innovative by Emirati officials, the program resembles existing rental payment models familiar to Israelis. The move reflects Dubai's ongoing efforts to address housing affordability amid rising living costs in the city.
