CSKA Sofia Ultras Punished for Nazi Salutes Ahead of Maccabi Tel Aviv Clash

Maccabi Tel Aviv is set to face CSKA Sofia in the Europa League qualifiers, but attention is also focused on the Bulgarian club's notorious ultras group, Sector G. This fan organization, known for its violent behavior, racism, and Nazi salutes, has a long history of clashes with opposing fans, players, and security forces. Sector G comprises factions such as "Animals" and "Offenders," both linked to hooliganism and extremist right-wing symbolism in Bulgaria.

Recently, during a match against Derry City in Northern Ireland, Sector G fans caused severe disturbances, including throwing chairs and objects at rival supporters and performing Nazi salutes. The incidents forced a 15-minute game suspension and led to UEFA imposing a €55,000 fine on CSKA Sofia, along with conditional restrictions on ticket sales for future away matches. UEFA explicitly attributed €20,000 of the fine to the Nazi salutes.

CSKA Sofia's ultras have a history of similar offenses, including racist displays and violent outbreaks. Israeli football fans recall a 2015 friendly in Sofia where CSKA ultras violently attacked M.S. Ashdod players and fans after a red card incident, forcing the Israeli team to flee the pitch amid thrown objects. Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred.

The rivalry between CSKA Sofia and Levski Sofia is infamous for its intensity and frequent violent clashes, often requiring heavy police presence. Although the upcoming match against Maccabi Tel Aviv is expected to be less volatile, recent events and the tense regional context suggest a potentially heated encounter. Authorities and fans alike hope the game proceeds without incident.
