Many people habitually run their washing machines on a quick 40-degree Celsius cycle, seeking to save time in their busy lives. However, experts caution that this common practice can lead to unpleasant odors, mold growth, and damage to both clothes and the machine itself. Low-temperature washes do not effectively kill bacteria or mold spores that accumulate in the drum, rubber seals, and detergent drawer, which can cause the machine to smell like rotten eggs.
Short wash programs also consume more electricity because the heating element works harder to quickly raise water temperature, increasing energy use and leaving behind detergent residues and dirt. In contrast, longer cycles such as cotton or eco-friendly programs use less energy overall due to extended soaking and efficient spinning, allowing detergents to better break down tough stains and grease. Additionally, frequent use of quick cycles prevents the washing machine's sensors from functioning properly, which are designed to optimize water usage and rinse cycles to save money.
To protect both clothes and the washing machine, it is recommended to separate laundry types, avoiding washing towels with delicate fabrics. Towels require higher temperature intensive cycles due to accumulated sweat and dead skin cells. Smart washing machines can assist by providing digital alerts or phone notifications when a self-cleaning cycle is needed. Regular maintenance is crucial: running an empty wash cycle once a month at 60 to 90 degrees Celsius with white vinegar or a specialized cleaner dissolves detergent buildup, eliminates odors, and keeps the machine fresh and clean.
