Israeli Fighter Ilai Barzilai Awaits UFC Debut Amid Upcoming September Event

Israeli mixed martial artist Ilai Barzilai has been anticipating a call-up to the UFC for some time, but it appears he will not compete on August 22 against American fighter Gabe Young as many had hoped. Barzilai was considered as a replacement opponent after Young's original rival withdrew, but due to short notice, UFC allowed Young to select his replacement from three candidates. Young chose Stanley Dorsett, who holds an undefeated 5-0 record, perceived as the easier matchup.

Despite missing this opportunity, Barzilai may still get a chance to fight at the UFC event on September 12 in Phoenix, headlined by Jean Silva. There are three lightweight bouts scheduled, and Barzilai is on standby as a potential substitute should any of the six lightweight fighters withdraw due to injury or other reasons. He will travel with Silva and make weight to be ready if called upon. While this is not a guaranteed fight, it signals UFC's interest in integrating Barzilai into the organization soon.

Barzilai recently secured a significant victory at a GFN event held at Menora Mivtachim Arena, where he defeated former UFC fighter Lucas Almeida by judges' decision. This win is seen as a key factor in UFC's serious consideration of Barzilai for future fights. Although his UFC debut may not happen this September, it is expected to occur in the near future.
