VO2 Max Emerges as Key Indicator for Longevity and Fitness
VO2 max, or maximal oxygen consumption, has gained prominence as a critical measure of cardiovascular fitness and overall health. Unlike common metrics such as weight or resting heart rate, VO2 max reflects the body's ability to absorb, transport, and utilize oxygen during intense physical exertion, integrating the function of the respiratory, cardiovascular, and muscular systems. Sharon Vasco, an exercise physiologist at the Levinsky-Wingate Academic Center, explains that this measure is now considered one of the strongest predictors of morbidity and mortality, supported by a 2024 British Journal of Sports Medicine review analyzing data from over 20 million people.
VO2 max is typically measured in a lab through a graded exercise test on a treadmill or bike, where oxygen consumption is monitored as exercise intensity increases until it plateaus. Field tests like the 12-minute Cooper run provide estimates, while some smartwatches offer approximations, though these can be inaccurate. The value varies by age and sex, with men generally having higher VO2 max than women in the same age group.
Importantly, VO2 max can be improved at any age, especially in individuals starting from lower fitness levels, with potential gains of up to 20% or more. Improvement comes from a combination of aerobic exercises such as walking, running, cycling, or swimming, performed regularly and progressively increasing in intensity and duration. Incorporating resistance training alongside aerobic workouts is also recommended for maximal health benefits.
Despite its significance, VO2 max is not a standalone indicator of health. Vasco cautions that it should be viewed as part of a broader biological and lifestyle context, noting that people with higher VO2 max often engage in healthier behaviors overall. The relationship between VO2 max and longevity is correlational, influenced by factors like physical activity, diet, and smoking habits. Thus, while VO2 max is a valuable fitness metric, it complements rather than replaces other health assessments.
