Rabbi Israel Melamed Revives Rabbi David Cohen's 'Dveika' Melody After 100 Years

Rabbi Israel Melamed from the settlement of Atneil in the Hebron Hills has released a renewed performance of the "Dveika" melody composed by Rabbi David Cohen, known as the Nazirite, about a century ago. The melody, set to Psalm 63, was originally created during a spiritual journey in the Judean Desert when Rabbi Cohen and two students lost their way and wandered for two days without water. This experience inspired the composition, which opens with the words, "God, You are my God, I will seek You," and includes the phrase "My soul clings to You," giving the melody its name.

Rabbi Melamed explained that after years of studying the piece, he found existing renditions lacking the original character, often suited more for recitation than singing. He meticulously arranged the melody according to the original source, with a minor lyrical adjustment to better fit the tune. His goal is to restore the melody to communal singing settings such as group gatherings, Sabbath meals, and moments of spiritual awakening.

Rabbi David Cohen regarded the "Dveika" melody as central to his spiritual life, singing it annually on the eve of Hoshanah Rabbah after studying the Idra Rabba. He described it as the "crown jewel" of his compositions and emphasized the integral role of song in Jewish spirituality, viewing prophecy and Torah as forms of sacred song. Rabbi Melamed now aims to reconnect contemporary audiences with this deeply spiritual and historic melody, bringing it back to synagogues and communal tables a century after its creation.
