Hollywood Mogul Ari Emanuel Acquires London Theatre Group ATG for £4.5 Billion

Hollywood agent and businessman Ari Emanuel has finalized a £4.5 billion deal to acquire the theatre group ATG, which owns several prestigious West End venues in London, including the Lyceum and Savoy theatres, according to the Financial Times. This marks the largest purchase to date by Emanuel's Mari Group, established last year with approximately $2 billion in funding from investors such as Apollo and the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA). Mari Group stated that the acquisition reflects its confidence in the growing live entertainment sector and its enthusiastic audiences.

ATG was previously owned by private equity firm Providence, which bought it in 2013 for £350 million. Under Providence's ownership, ATG expanded from 40 to 70 venues, including Broadway theatres in New York like the Walter Kerr and Lyric theatres, the latter currently hosting "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." The acquisition adds to Mari Group's expanding portfolio, which also includes the Frieze Art Festival, the Miami Open tennis tournament, and the Winter Wonderland festival in Hyde Park.

Emanuel, who began his career in theatre, described the purchase as a long-term bet on the future of live events. He is the brother of Rahm Emanuel, former White House Chief of Staff to Barack Obama and former Chicago mayor, and serves as chairman of the talent agency WME Group, representing stars such as director Martin Scorsese and Oprah Winfrey. The deal comes amid strong demand for live show tickets following the COVID-19 pandemic. Emanuel previously told the Financial Times that as technology makes people more efficient and productive, they will have more time and money to spend on entertainment and leisure activities.
