Argentina Calms Fears Over Emiliano Martinez’s Finger Injury
Argentina has been anxious about Emiliano Martinez’s fitness ahead of the team’s first match in its World Cup title defense, against Algeria in a few days. The concern stems from a finger injury he suffered in Aston Villa’s Europa League final against Freiburg, and since then fans have been watching closely for signs he might not be ready.
The alarm grew in recent days after several training videos showed Martinez without gloves and with a bandage on his finger. The worry intensified on Saturday, when he was seen leaving an Argentina practice session before it ended.
Even so, Argentine media later played down the fears. TyC Sports reported that Martinez, known as “Dibu,” took part in the latest training with both gloves on, worked at a higher intensity than before, and even stood in goal during drills. The outlet said that despite some discomfort, he appears likely to be fit for the match against Algeria.
A training clip from Sunday added to the reassurance, showing Martinez stepping off the grass and signaling with a thumbs-up after being asked whether he would be available. “Everything is fine, I have the best physical therapist in the world,” he said, easing concerns among Argentina supporters.
