UK Study Links Moderate Wine Drinking to 21% Lower Heart Disease Mortality Risk
A large-scale UK study tracked over 340,000 adults for more than 13 years to examine how different types of alcoholic beverages affect mortality risk. The research found that heavy alcohol consumption increased the risk of death from all causes, cancer, and heart disease regardless of the drink type. However, among low to moderate drinkers, the type of alcohol consumed showed distinct associations with health outcomes.
Specifically, moderate wine consumption was linked to a 21% reduction in mortality risk from cardiovascular diseases compared to non-drinkers or rare drinkers. In contrast, even low consumption of beer, cider, or spirits was associated with about a 9% increase in cardiovascular mortality risk. Researchers suggest that compounds in red wine, such as polyphenols and antioxidants, along with drinking wine typically during meals, may contribute to these differences. Conversely, beer and spirits are often consumed outside meals and linked to less healthy lifestyle patterns.
Dr. Kay Elkra, a family physician with Maccabi Healthcare in northern Israel, emphasized the complexity of interpreting these findings. She noted that while the study shows statistical associations, it does not prove that wine directly causes lower heart disease risk. Confounding factors like healthier diets, physical activity, and socioeconomic status among wine drinkers may influence results. Additionally, alcohol consumption was self-reported only at the study's start, limiting insights into changes over time.
Dr. Elkra cautioned against viewing alcohol as a health product or starting to drink for heart benefits. She stressed that the amount and frequency of alcohol intake are more critical than the type of drink. Alcohol's effects vary by age, health conditions, medications, and other risk factors, and no safe universal alcohol consumption level can be recommended. The study underscores the nuanced relationship between alcohol, beverage type, lifestyle, and health rather than endorsing simple conclusions like "wine is good, beer is bad."
