Appeals Court Upholds Defamation Ruling Against Activist, Awards Amital Segal Shekels 145,000
The District Court on Sunday rejected the appeal filed by left-wing activist and former spokesman Omer Nahmani against a defamation judgment in favor of journalist Amit Segal of Channel 12. The court left in place the earlier ruling ordering Nahmani to pay Segal shekels 145,000 for libel.
The case stemmed from a series of social media posts in which Nahmani described Segal as a “racist,” a “member of a crime gang,” and an “associate of a criminal.” Nahmani had turned down Segal’s settlement offers and launched a crowdfunding campaign arguing that the lawsuit was meant to silence him, but the court rejected that claim outright and said the statements were lies not protected by law.
The original ruling also found that a post by former MK Yair Golan about Segal constituted defamation, but Golan avoided damages because of parliamentary immunity. Nahmani is identified as a political activist and former spokesman for Golan.
