Amit Trapochnik, known online as Amit Kapit, has built a unique career by tasting and reviewing some of the most unusual and challenging foods worldwide. Unlike typical food influencers who focus on visually appealing dishes, Kapit seeks out bizarre and often repulsive items, from insects and scorpions in Thailand to mysterious canned fish from Russian delis and tired sandwiches from gas stations. His willingness to eat nearly anything, despite stomach discomfort or unpleasant flavors, has earned him a dedicated following.
Kapit’s content goes beyond shock value; he also offers honest reviews of neighborhood food stalls, price checks, and coverage of places his audience genuinely wants to discover. He even auditioned for the Israeli cooking show "MasterChef" to prove that TikTok-born food content can be creative and refined. In April, he sparked controversy with a video titled "Tasting What Was Eaten During the Holocaust," where he recreated and sampled foods associated with starvation in ghettos and camps. The video divided viewers between those who saw it as a powerful educational tool and others who considered it an unnecessary provocation.
Before becoming a food influencer at age 38, Kapit worked in film and video production. He transitioned to social media after realizing the potential for income and personal exposure. His content evolved from polished videos to authentic, entertaining clips filmed on his phone. During COVID-19 lockdowns, he began buying and tasting unusual supermarket items, discovering a niche audience drawn to bizarre foods. His wife encouraged him to travel to Thailand to continue this journey.
Kapit acknowledges the mental toll of constant content creation and the pressure to balance audience expectations with personal authenticity. He refuses to cross certain ethical lines, such as eating dolphins, dogs, cats, human flesh, or shark fins, citing animal welfare and conservation concerns. He also avoids consuming anything unsanitary purely for entertainment. Regarding the Holocaust video, he stands by his work as a meaningful reminder of history despite criticism.
Looking ahead, Kapit envisions hosting a food and flavor TV show and acting in series and films. His broader dream is to promote unity among Israelis through his content, emphasizing respect and seeing the nation as one family. He believes this unity is crucial for future generations to avoid conflict.
