Gilad Sharon Set to Enter Knesset for Likud Amid Party Resignations

Gilad Sharon, son of former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, is poised to become a Knesset member for the Likud party following a wave of resignations from the party list. This development comes after Yuli Edelstein and Dan Illouz left Likud for rival parties, creating vacancies that have reached down to previously unrealistic list positions. With Dan Illouz's departure to Yisrael Beiteinu and Yuli Edelstein joining Gilad Erdan's new party, several Likud members are expected to resign, paving the way for Sharon's entry.

Despite earlier attempts to run for the Knesset being blocked by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who refused to shorten the required party membership period for Sharon, and a subsequent defeat in the primaries where he was placed 48th on the list, Sharon is now set to be sworn in as a Likud MK during the current transitional government. He did not participate in the latest primaries but benefits from the recent reshuffling.

Sharon's tenure may be limited as the Knesset is largely inactive during the election recess, with legislative activity requiring approval from a committee representing both coalition and opposition. Additionally, party election funding is centralized and does not directly benefit individual MKs, limiting Sharon's influence within the party despite his new status. This marks an unplanned political comeback for Sharon, who will serve as a Likud MK until the next Knesset is sworn in after the upcoming elections.
