Syria and Russia Agree to Redeploy Russian Forces to Khmeimim and Tartus Bases as Joint Training Centers
The Syrian Foreign Ministry announced a memorandum of understanding with Russia regarding the return of Russian forces to the Khmeimim and Tartus military bases. After a year and a half of negotiations and intensive discussions, the fate of the two Russian bases was finalized. According to the agreement, a reorganization process will begin to redefine the Russian military presence along the Syrian coast. Syria will manage the civilian facilities, while both sides agreed to repurpose the military bases into joint training centers. The memorandum sets a timeframe of no more than three months to complete the transformation process.
