Mystery Products Drive Consumer Excitement Through Uncertainty and Social Sharing
Consumers are increasingly drawn to purchasing mystery products without knowing their exact contents, driven by curiosity and the thrill of surprise. Dr. Willy Abraham, head of technological marketing at Sapir Academic College, explains that this trend leverages a psychological mechanism where uncertainty heightens anticipation, making the moment of discovery a key part of the product experience. This approach transforms routine purchases into exciting events that engage the brain's reward system.
Strauss Elite recently embraced this trend by launching a "Mystery" line of Crunch gum, packaged in purple jars with question marks, where consumers cannot identify the gum flavor before tasting. The flavors include strawberry, peach, and watermelon, all gluten- and sugar-free. Similarly, the Danish retailer Flying Tiger Copenhagen offers surprise bags priced at 40 shekels but containing items worth at least 80 shekels. These bags are labeled only by gender or mixed categories and contain various products like toys, stationery, kitchen accessories, or decor.
Dr. Abraham notes that consumers value experiences more than material goods, with surprise products combining tangible items with moments of anticipation and storytelling. These products also fit well with social media culture, especially among Generation Z, who enjoy sharing unboxing experiences online. The excitement of revealing unknown contents often becomes content itself, enhancing brand engagement.
However, there is a risk when the surprise fails to meet expectations. Abraham cites the example of the LOL Surprise dolls craze, where repeated identical items led to consumer disappointment. He warns that brands must balance mystery with genuine value to maintain trust and avoid backlash. Successful mystery products can generate high consumer involvement, organic social media exposure, and long-term loyalty if this balance is achieved.
