Florida Man Influenced by NYC Mayor Zoran Mamdani Attacks Sarasota Chabad House

A 30-year-old Florida man, Brighton Leshinger, was charged with a hate crime after deliberately throwing a brick through a window of a Chabad house in Sarasota on July 29. According to a police affidavit released on August 2, Leshinger admitted during questioning that social media content, including a video by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, incited his anger and motivated the attack. In the video posted on July 21, Mamdani harshly criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, labeling him a "war criminal" and accusing him of orchestrating a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people, resulting in over 73,000 deaths and numerous injuries, including attacks on hospitals and maternity centers.

Police reviewed Leshinger's social media activity and found that the only political content on his public Instagram was Mamdani's video, which Leshinger shared repeatedly in the days leading up to the attack. Surveillance footage captured Leshinger walking barefoot around 6 a.m. with a blue towel covering his head, picking up a brick from a nearby yard, throwing it at the synagogue window, and fleeing the scene. Leshinger also declared himself "anti-Israeli" during the investigation. The incident highlights concerns about the influence of online political rhetoric on acts of antisemitic violence in the United States.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, emphasizing the role of social media in fueling hate crimes and the need to address such incitement to prevent further attacks on Jewish institutions.
