Justice Minister Yariv Levin is set to inform the Supreme Court that he will proceed with appointing the new head of the Police Investigations Department (Mahash) despite the ongoing election period. This decision comes amid a legal dispute between Levin and the State Attorney Gali Baharav-Miara regarding the implementation of the new Mahash law. Levin's main argument is that the new Mahash law was enacted in June, prior to the official announcement of the Knesset elections, and therefore the usual restrictions on government ministers making significant decisions or senior appointments during election times do not apply in this case. Under the new law, Mahash will be separated from the State Attorney's Office and become an independent unit within the Ministry of Justice, reporting directly to the minister.
