Avigdor Kahalani Urges Israel to Become a Strong Regional Power Ahead of Elections

Avigdor Kahalani, a decorated Israeli war hero and former politician, has released his seventh book, "Between Main and Minor! - Insights from a Long and Winding Road," sharing his life lessons and views on Israel’s future. In an interview marking the book launch on August 8, 2026, Kahalani expressed pride in Israel’s youth, contrasting them favorably with previous generations despite common criticisms. He emphasized the need for Israel to become a powerful nation that instills fear in its neighbors, particularly regarding Iran’s nuclear threat.

Kahalani, who served as a tank company commander during the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War, where he earned the Medal of Valor and the Medal of Courage, spoke candidly about internal Israeli politics. He criticized relying on external figures like former U.S. President Trump to solve Israel’s internal problems, urging Israelis to establish political parties and address issues domestically through the Knesset. Known for his disciplined and no-nonsense approach, Kahalani described himself as a "one-man show" with no assistants, dedicating his time fully to his work.

After retiring from the IDF as a brigadier general in 1989, Kahalani chaired the Amal school network and the Armored Corps memorial committee. He was elected to the Knesset in 1992 with the Labor Party and later founded the Third Way party, serving as Minister of Internal Security in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. He recalled his close working relationship with Netanyahu, highlighting mutual trust and respect.

Kahalani’s new book, handwritten in green ink, compiles his reflections on life from birth to death, offering advice based on his extensive experience. He remains deeply engaged in Israel’s security and political discourse, advocating for a strong military posture and internal unity ahead of upcoming elections.
