Givatayim Mayor Denounces Hapoel Ramat Gan Over Name Dispute and Funding Claims

Hapoel Ramat Gan, recently promoted to the Israeli Premier League for the first time since the 2012/13 season, is embroiled in a public dispute with Givatayim's mayor, Ran Konik, over the club's name and municipal support. The football club, which historically played as Hapoel Ramat Gan Givatayim due to its use of Givatayim's Maccabiah Stadium, decided to drop "Givatayim" from its official name. This followed complications with the Israel Football Association, which initially allowed the club to add "Givatayim" to its name but later required a special application that the club failed to submit by the July deadline.

The controversy intensified after reports emerged in May that Mayor Konik refused to allocate 800,000 shekels from the city budget to the club and halted youth teams' access to local fields. Konik denied these claims, stating the budget approval had been consistent since 2014, totaling around two million shekels. He accused the club's owner, Hanan Salanson, of spreading falsehoods to incite residents against him and the municipality.

Konik emphasized that the official club name remains "Hapoel Ramat Gan" and expressed regret over the club's decision to forgo the Givatayim affiliation despite the historical connection spanning 70 years. Meanwhile, the team, coached by Masai Dego, has started the Toto Cup season undefeated and aims to maintain its Premier League status. The mayor also secured an official letter from the football association confirming no application was filed by the club to include "Givatayim" in its name, contradicting the club's public statements.

This dispute highlights tensions between local government support and sports club identity, with potential implications for community relations and the club's future branding.
