Refugee Turned Striker and Former Softball Player Lead Australia to Shock World Cup Win
Australia ended a four-World-Cup opening-day losing streak with a surprising 2-0 victory over Turkey in its 2026 World Cup opener in Vancouver. The Socceroos shut down Turkey’s star-studded attack, led by Arda Guler, and the decisive figure was 22-year-old goalkeeper Patrick Beach.
Coach Tony Popovic’s biggest surprise was starting Beach instead of veteran captain Mat Ryan. Popovic said after the match, “We always saw his quality, I have a lot of faith in this young guy, and yes, he stepped up today, so I am very happy for him.” Beach had made only two previous senior appearances, both in friendlies, before this tournament.
The Melbourne City keeper finished with eight saves, including three from inside the box, and prevented 1.54 expected goals. Beach was a former softball player who played as a defender in football until age 14, when he asked to switch into goal. He received his first Socceroos call-up only in March.
Australia’s opening goal came from 20-year-old Nestor Irankunda, whose background is equally striking. He was born in a refugee camp in Tanzania and grew up there until his family emigrated to Adelaide. With no academy pedigree, he emerged from street football, scored for Adelaide United’s first team at 15, and later moved to Bayern Munich in 2024 for a record A-League transfer of 1.8 million euros. He was then loaned to Grasshoppers and later transferred to Watford for 4 million euros, where he has played regularly and scored four goals with five assists last season.
