MrBeast Becomes First Person to Reach 500 Million Followers

Jimmy Donaldson, known worldwide as MrBeast, made digital history on Friday by becoming the first person ever to reach 500 million followers. More than 600,000 people watched the milestone live, and some fans even tried to delay it by unfollowing just before the finish line. When the count finally passed the mark, Donaldson celebrated the achievement.

The 28-year-old said he never expected to get here, noting, “Statistically, I was not supposed to be here. I didn’t grow up with much.” He recalled that his family went bankrupt during the 2008 financial crisis and that, early in his career, he had to save every dollar to buy a basic microphone. He also said he once borrowed money from his mother to pay for his wedding.

Donaldson said his success came from discipline, persistence and long-term thinking, not luck. Although his company is valued at about $5 billion, he said almost all revenue is reinvested into content and productions. He added that he spent about five years intensely studying YouTube, analyzing algorithms and what grabs viewers’ attention, and believes real mastery takes roughly 100,000 hours of work, not just 10,000. He said he has already invested about 70,000 hours in content creation and improvement.

MrBeast’s appeal, he said, comes from combining huge entertainment productions with large-scale acts of charity. His channel has featured challenges worth $3.5 million and nearly 1 billion views, along with projects such as funding cataract surgery for 1,000 people, providing hearing devices to 1,000 hearing-impaired people, helping 2,000 amputees walk again, planting more than 24 million trees, cleaning millions of kilograms of ocean waste, and building 100 water wells in Africa. Donaldson said he is more motivated than ever and wants to keep creating bigger stories and better videos.
