Thailand Airports Allow Security to Open Suspected Luggage Without Owner Present Starting October

Starting October 16, 2026, security personnel at Thai airports will be authorized to open and inspect checked luggage without the owner's presence or consent. This new measure, announced by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, aims to enhance security and reduce flight delays by allowing more thorough checks when suspicious items are detected during luggage scans. The authority clarified that this power will only be exercised when there is reasonable suspicion of explosives, hazardous materials, or other prohibited items inside the baggage.

All luggage inspections will be recorded on video, and passengers will receive an official notice placed inside their bags informing them of the search. Travelers are advised to use TSA-approved locks that security staff can open without damaging the luggage. Additionally, passengers are strongly recommended not to pack valuables, important documents, or essential personal items in checked baggage and to carefully review their luggage contents before flying.
