Chazi Cohen Releases New Book Offering Spiritual Journey Through Selichot Prayers
Ahead of the Days of Awe and Selichot prayers, Chazi Cohen has published his third book, "Anenu: The Soul’s Journey in Selichot Poetry," through Divrei Shir publishing. The book provides an in-depth exploration of the spiritual meanings behind the Selichot poems traditionally recited during the month of Elul, inviting readers to rediscover the depth and renewal embedded in these familiar prayers.
Cohen encourages readers to approach the Selichot with an open heart and mind, emphasizing that each poem expresses a unique way for individuals to stand before God. A central chapter traces the development of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy from their revelation to Moses after the sin of the Golden Calf to their role as the core of Selichot recitations. Cohen explains how these attributes evolved from mere pleas for forgiveness into calls for personal refinement and emulation of God's merciful qualities.
The book also guides readers through key Selichot poems such as "Anshei Emunah Avdu" and "Tihmenu MeRaot," framing them as spiritual processes where longing for past generations transforms into present-day responsibility and renewed faith. Additional chapters discuss the significance of confession on both personal and communal levels and the theme of God's kingship as a foundation for rebuilding hope and faith.
Cohen offers fresh interpretations of well-known poems including "Anenu," "Adon HaSelichot," "Bizchari Al Mishkavi," and "Shomer Yisrael," highlighting the power of words, melodies, and singing to strengthen the bond between individuals and their Creator. The book concludes with an appendix on Rabbi Sasson Shanduch’s teachings, who views poetry as a vital tool for repentance and character improvement.
