New York Knicks Win First NBA Title Since 1973
The New York Knicks captured their first NBA championship in 53 years, beating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the finals and taking the series 4-1. The win came overnight between Saturday and Sunday, and it gave the franchise its third title overall.
New York trailed by as many as 16 points before mounting a late comeback. Jalen Brunson led the rally with 45 points, and with less than three minutes left, the Knicks took their first lead since the opening quarter on the way to closing out the series.
The championship capped an impressive playoff run for New York. A defining moment came in Game 4 of the finals, when the Knicks erased a 29-point deficit to pull off another dramatic victory. Brunson and O.G. Anunoby were among the main drivers of the team’s postseason success.
San Antonio finished the season without a title despite a strong playoff showing from young star Victor Wembanyama in the first postseason of his career. The Knicks’ previous championships came in 1970 and 1973, making this their first since the last title run more than five decades ago.
