After Finals Loss, Spurs Face Big Roster Decisions Around De'Aaron Fox
San Antonio’s season ended with a 4-1 loss to the New York Knicks in the 2025/26 NBA Finals, and the Spurs now enter an important offseason after finishing as runners-up for the first time since 2014. Victor Wembanyama, who helped lead them past Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals, still appears to be the franchise centerpiece, but he will have to wait for a title run.
The biggest question is what to do with point guard De'Aaron Fox. The 28-year-old is set to begin a new four-year, $222 million deal next season, but his uneven Finals performance has sparked debate about whether San Antonio should keep him or trade him. If the Spurs do move Fox, one possibility would be to let rookie Dylan Harper start and develop alongside Stephon Castle, who will remain in the lineup.
Wembanyama is expected to sign a five-year maximum extension worth $252 million, with the figure potentially rising to $303.3 million. That is the Spurs’ top priority before they consider other moves. The team may also look for frontcourt help around Wembanyama, with Lauri Markkanen, Michael Porter Jr. and Trey Murphy named as possible fits, though no trade talks have been reported.
Juliian Champagnie has a $3 million team option this summer and is expected to land a larger contract after breaking the franchise record for three-pointers in a season. Devin Vassell is under contract through 2029, and Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson through 2027. Luke Kornet and rookie Carter Bryant are also signed, while Harrison Barnes, Kelly Olynyk, Jordan McLaughlin, Lindy Waters, Bismack Biyombo and Mason Plumlee are set to become free agents. San Antonio also holds four draft picks, Nos. 20, 35, 42 and 44.
