Moderna Begins First Human Trial for Ebola Vaccine Using mRNA Technology
Moderna has initiated the first human clinical trial for its experimental vaccine targeting the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. This Phase 1 trial, approved by Canadian health authorities, involves approximately 80 healthy volunteers across multiple sites in Canada. The study aims to evaluate the vaccine's safety, participant tolerance, and immune response. Moderna's vaccine uses mRNA technology, the same platform employed in its COVID-19 vaccine development.
This development comes amid a severe Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has resulted in thousands of infections and hundreds of deaths. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this outbreak ranks among the largest in the disease's history. Both the World Health Organization and the African CDC have declared the situation a public health emergency, prompting intensified international efforts to contain the virus.
Other vaccine candidates against this Ebola strain are also undergoing trials, including initiatives in the United Kingdom. Moderna emphasized that this trial represents a critical milestone in addressing one of the most dangerous Ebola strains, for which no approved vaccine currently exists. Separately, Israel's Ministry of Health has ruled out any suspected Ebola cases within the country.
