Jerusalem Family Court Approves Reunion Between 13-Year-Old Boy and Mother After Years Apart

The Jerusalem Family Court recently approved a reunion between a 13-year-old boy and his mother, whom he has not seen since she left the country when he was a toddler. Judge Moshe Brown dismissed the father's opposition to the renewed contact, relying in part on an essay the boy wrote expressing his desire to finally meet his mother. The parents were married for about two years, with their son born in 2013. Two years later, the mother moved to the United States and has not seen her son since.

A clinical psychologist appointed by the court found the father responsible for the estrangement, describing him as dominant and noting the boy's strong emotional attachment to him. The psychologist highlighted the boy's essay, which won a prize in a writing competition, as evidence of his longing to meet his mother, stating, "I'm not angry, Mom. I just want to know who you are." The mother argued the essay was a "visual bombshell" demonstrating her son's wish to reconnect after the long separation.

The psychologist recommended that the reunion take place gradually within a support unit framework. The father, represented by attorney Maya Reshel Arbel, claimed the expert violated ethical rules and raised concerns about the mother's past suicide attempt and abandonment fears. However, Judge Brown ruled in favor of the mother, emphasizing the urgency of renewing contact to prevent irreversible harm and difficulty in future reconciliation.

The court ordered the first meeting to occur as soon as possible in the support unit, accompanied by a social worker. The father is responsible for bringing the boy and preparing him in advance for the meeting, with guidance from the court-appointed expert or the support unit. The judge stressed that every day of continued separation increases the risk of lasting damage to the mother-son relationship.
