Israeli Parents Launch Campaign to Combat Childhood Social Isolation During Summer
The National Parents' Committee in Israel has initiated a new campaign titled "Every Child Belongs" to address the issue of social isolation among children during the summer break. The campaign aims to strengthen children's sense of belonging and prevent loneliness and social disconnection throughout August.
In collaboration with the Wings of Freedom Association, the committee outlined practical steps for local authorities to implement, including organizing accessible community activities at low or no cost, appointing coordinators to connect education departments, schools, community centers, youth movements, and parent committees, and proactively identifying and inviting children who lack social connections to participate. They also encourage recruiting teenagers and volunteers to facilitate social gatherings and ensuring summer programs are accessible to families outside existing social networks.
The initiative calls on parents and the wider community to be attentive to children excluded from social circles, suggesting that even a single invitation to play or attend a community event can significantly improve a child's sense of inclusion and readiness for the new school year. Oren Ozen, chairman of the National Parents' Committee, emphasized that while local authorities are not expected to solve every child's loneliness alone, they should strive to offer every child at least one opportunity to engage socially and feel seen.
The campaign highlights the importance of community involvement in mitigating childhood loneliness during the long summer vacation, aiming to foster stronger social ties before the academic year begins.
