Weight-Loss Injections May Lower Breast Cancer Recurrence Risk, Early Studies Suggest
New observational studies indicate that GLP-1 receptor agonists, drugs commonly used to treat obesity and diabetes, might reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence. These findings, reported as preliminary, show a statistical association but do not prove a direct causal effect of the medications on cancer outcomes. Experts caution that other factors related to patients receiving these drugs could influence the results.
The proposed mechanism behind the potential benefit involves metabolic changes induced by the drugs, which lead to significant weight loss and reduced body fat. Excess fat tissue is known to increase estrogen production, a hormone that can promote the growth of certain breast tumors, especially in postmenopausal women. Lowering fat mass may thus decrease estrogen levels and reduce the likelihood of cancer returning.
Additionally, obesity is linked to chronic low-grade inflammation, which recent research suggests may facilitate cancer progression. GLP-1 medications have been shown to reduce markers of inflammation, possibly contributing to the observed protective effect. Similar studies have hinted that these drugs might also lower the risk of other obesity-related cancers, though definitive proof is lacking.
To establish a causal relationship, randomized controlled trials are necessary, but none have yet been conducted specifically for breast cancer recurrence prevention with GLP-1 drugs. Medical professionals emphasize that these injections should not replace standard breast cancer treatments such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or hormonal therapy. Patients using weight-loss injections must continue regular oncological follow-up and adhere to all recommended therapies.
