Botox Shows Promise in Improving Wound Healing and Reducing Scarring, Study Finds
A new meta-analysis reviewing 19 studies involving 686 patients suggests that botulinum toxin (Botox) injections near wounds or surgical sites can improve skin healing and reduce abnormal scarring. Published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the research found that Botox consistently led to narrower scars, better skin texture, and higher patient satisfaction.
According to the researchers, approximately 100 million people worldwide develop new scars annually, with 11 million experiencing problematic scars such as hypertrophic scars and keloids. These types of scars can cause pain, itching, restricted movement, and significant psychological distress.
Botox is believed to aid healing by reducing mechanical tension from muscle movement around the wound and decreasing local inflammation, which together may promote better recovery and lower the risk of abnormal scar formation. Dr. Carlos Zavaleta-Corovera from Científica del Sur University in Peru, who led the study, described Botox as a promising tool for scar prevention and quality improvement, especially in areas where muscle movement hinders healing.
In Israel, plastic surgeons see potential for applying these findings locally. Dr. Meir Cohen, chairman of the Israeli Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, called the results a breakthrough for a condition with limited treatment options and said the approach could benefit patients undergoing surgery, accident victims, and soldiers with severe scars.
However, the treatment is not yet approved by the FDA or Israel's Ministry of Health for scar prevention, making its use off-label. The meta-analysis reported no serious side effects, with only mild, temporary reactions like local pain, itching, or headaches. Dr. Cohen emphasized that while off-label use is common when supported by scientific evidence, further research is needed before Botox can become a standard scar prevention therapy.
