Former MK Ofer Shelah Criticizes Israeli Government's Gaza Policy and Regional Influence
Former Knesset member Ofer Shelah criticized the Israeli government's handling of the Gaza Strip during an interview on 103FM on August 4, 2026. He argued that the current structure in Gaza, which Israel finds logical, is unenforceable and lacks the financial means for rehabilitation, noting that the government acts quickly to prevent any real progress. Shelah described the Israeli plan for Gaza as "reasonable" but acknowledged there is no true solution without a plan that includes Palestinian elements and international support.
Regarding Iran, Shelah highlighted ongoing dialogues between the United States, Iran, and Gulf states that determine regional dynamics, emphasizing Israel's exclusion from these discussions. He stated that despite Israel's military actions across the Middle East over the past three years, it remains irrelevant to the region's power balance and architecture. Shelah called this Israel's "real blow" from the current war, underscoring the country's diminished influence.
Shelah also criticized Defense Minister Yoav Gallant amid the recent controversy involving Central Command Chief Avi Blot. The interview included references to Turkish engineering equipment operating inside Gaza and footage of an Israeli military operation eliminating a terrorist in the Strip. The remarks reflect ongoing debates within Israel about its strategic role and policies in the Middle East, particularly concerning Gaza and Iran.
