Israeli Students Develop Life-Changing Smart Toilet Paper Holder for Disabled IDF Veterans

Kobi Segal, a 52-year-old disabled IDF veteran injured during the First Intifada while serving in the Armored Corps, struggled with basic tasks like using toilet paper due to his right-hand disability. Despite numerous surgeries and rehabilitation, simple actions requiring two hands remained challenging, especially in public restrooms where standard toilet paper holders demand bilateral use.

To address this, two third-year mechanical engineering students at Sami Shamoon College of Engineering (SCE), Bar Tsibotovsky and Maxim Yudaev, collaborated with the organization Tikkun Olam Makers (TOM) to create an innovative solution. Their device, named "Smart Paper," uses a motion sensor to automatically dispense toilet paper with one hand, allowing users to pull the desired amount without assistance. The project underwent four design iterations to perfect the strength and durability of the paper roll holder.

Guided by SCE lecturer Naama Agassi and designer Ilan Elkart, the students emphasized understanding the real human needs behind the technical challenge. Their invention won recognition and a $500 prize at TOM's Global Innovation Challenge, gaining international attention. The device was donated to Be'er Sheva's Beit HaLochem rehabilitation center, where Segal is treated, and additional units are being prepared for other disabled veterans.

The project is open source on TOM's website, enabling anyone to build the device at a cost of 100 to 270 shekels depending on parts sourcing. Segal described the invention as life-changing, highlighting the importance of engineering solutions that restore independence to people with disabilities. The students expressed pride in contributing to meaningful improvements in daily life and plan to continue refining and expanding the product's availability.
