New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani faced an embarrassing moment at the funeral of Angel Sarah Rampersad, a 28-year-old American soldier from Queens who was killed in an Iranian missile attack on a Jordanian airbase on July 17. Mamdani attended the service on Friday but was relegated to the fourth row and was not invited to deliver the speech he had prepared.

According to a source present at the event, Rampersad's family, supporters of former President Donald Trump, opposed Mamdani, a Democrat and vocal critic of the U.S. and Israeli policies toward Iran, speaking at the ceremony. The New York Post, a pro-Republican tabloid, described the incident as humiliating for Mamdani and noted the city did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Witnesses reported Mamdani reviewing his speech on an iPad while other speakers, including New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards, addressed the crowd. When his name was not called, Mamdani appeared frustrated and angry before putting aside his tablet.

Mamdani's team later released the remarks he intended to deliver, emphasizing the personal sacrifices of Rampersad without political content. The family reportedly wanted to avoid any political distractions during the funeral, reflecting the deep partisan divide surrounding the event.

Rampersad was one of three U.S. soldiers killed in the Iranian missile strike on the Al-Asad Airbase in Jordan. The funeral took place at a church in Ozone Park, Queens, her home borough.
