Lithuania Says Vilnius Air Alert Was Triggered by Weather Balloon
Lithuania’s National Crisis Management Centre said the suspicious aerial object seen over Vilnius and initially identified as a drone was actually a weather balloon. The update came after air-raid alerts were heard in the capital earlier in the day.
NATO fighter jets were scrambled in response to the initial assessment, before authorities determined the object posed no drone threat. The incident centered on Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, and was treated at first as a possible unmanned aircraft sighting.
The center’s clarification resolved the immediate alarm, but the report did not say what, if anything, happened afterward beyond the reclassification of the object.
