United States opens World Cup with convincing 4-1 win over Paraguay
The United States national soccer team, one of the World Cup co-hosts, made a strong start to the tournament with a 4-1 victory over Paraguay in front of about 70,000 spectators at the Los Angeles stadium.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side took the lead after only seven minutes when Damian Bobadilla scored an own goal. Folarin Balogun then doubled the advantage with goals in the 31st and 45th minutes, giving the U.S. a commanding halftime lead.
Paraguay pulled one back in the 73rd minute through Mauricio, but the Americans quickly restored control. Giovanni Reyna sealed the result with a fine goal in the 97th minute, completing the scoring at 4-1.
