Jelly sandals, once simple plastic footwear, have undergone a remarkable transformation from their historical roots to a modern fashion statement. Originally known as the shoes of Eritrean independence fighters during their war for freedom, these durable and affordable plastic sandals became a symbol of liberation. In 2002, a monument featuring iron replicas of these black plastic sandals was erected in Asmara, Eritrea's capital, commemorating their significance.

Today, jelly sandals are enjoying a major resurgence in global fashion, particularly in the summer of 2026. They have evolved from casual beachwear to a trendy item featured on runways by major fashion houses such as Chloé, Loewe, and The Row. These brands have reimagined jelly sandals in vibrant neon colors and diverse styles, including ballerina flats and flip-flops. Brazilian brand Melissa also collaborated with Israeli shoe company Shul to release jelly sandal models available at Story stores.

This revival taps into early 2000s nostalgia when transparent and colorful sandals were wardrobe staples, akin to the popularity of clear silicone bra straps. Modern jelly sandals combine playful, youthful aesthetics with sophisticated styling when paired with casual dresses or jeans and T-shirts. Technological improvements have addressed past issues of discomfort and sweating by using higher-quality materials and cushioned soles, although they remain less ideal for humid coastal climates.

In Israel, a wide range of jelly sandal options is available across price points, from affordable models by Gali and Perpua to higher-end designs by Nine West and Boutique M13. Prices range from around 60 to over 500 shekels, reflecting the sandals' broad appeal and versatility in contemporary fashion.
