Israeli and Iranian Judokas Close Seven-Year Chapter with Historic Exhibition Match in Netanya

In a poignant moment on the beach in Netanya, Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei savored his freedom and the warmth of Israel, collecting seashells as mementos for his children. Mollaei had come to Israel to participate in an exhibition judo match against Israeli world champion Sagi Muki, marking the closure of a seven-year saga that began at the 2019 World Judo Championships. That year, Mollaei, under pressure from the Iranian regime, deliberately lost a semifinal to avoid facing Muki, leading to Iran's suspension from international judo until late 2023.

Muki recalled the emotional reception Mollaei received upon arrival, including a family dinner filled with Persian music and dancing. "In my wildest dreams, I never imagined sitting with Saeid, the Iranian, laughing and enjoying life at my home," Muki said. Mollaei expressed gratitude for the local support, especially from the Persian community in Israel, and reflected on the honor he felt after winning a silver medal at the Jerusalem Masters in 2022.

Their friendship, born from a shared passion for judo and transcending political divides, symbolizes hope amid ongoing regional conflicts. Muki emphasized, "Our story is bigger than judo; it is about life, unity, and hope for humanity." Both athletes have transitioned from competition to advocacy, delivering lectures promoting peace and understanding between Israel, Iran, and beyond.

The exhibition match, held with the support of Netanya Municipality and produced by the sports event company Mythos, was also the climax of a documentary directed by Yariv Mozar, set to air on Channel 13. The event featured symbolic moments such as the two judogi bearing the Israeli and Iranian flags placed side by side. The match itself was competitive and respectful, ending with Muki's victory and a heartfelt embrace between the two.

Following the match, the athletes mingled freely with an enthusiastic crowd, taking selfies and sharing smiles without security barriers.
