Former Air Force Pilot Shay Kalach Joins Likud Primaries to Strengthen Jewish State
Retired Air Force Major Shay Kalach, a former combat pilot, is running in the Likud party's national primaries, aiming to bring his worldview into Israeli politics. After years of military service, public activism, and religious study, Kalach explained in a Channel 7 interview that his decision stems from a sense of mission and a desire to influence Israel's future. He began his public involvement by combating draft refusal and founding the "Netzach Israel" movement, continuing his commitment to national service beyond his military career.
Kalach emphasized that he chose to run within an established ruling party rather than creating a new political framework, motivated by a wish to impact the national agenda and the state's character. He recounted his life journey from growing up in Kibbutz Ginosar, through his Air Force command roles, to his religious studies, highlighting how interactions with many religious Zionist soldiers deepened his understanding of Israel's Jewish identity.
Acknowledging personal costs linked to his public stances, Kalach said entering politics requires readiness to bear such burdens, which he accepts as part of his mission. He expressed appreciation for the religious Zionist community's contribution to national security but stressed his intention to address all Israeli citizens. His approach integrates his background, military service, Torah study, and public activism.
Looking ahead, Kalach plans to promote long-term reforms in Israel's public and political systems, focusing on judicial reform, strengthening the Jewish character of the state, and security issues that need renewed strategic planning.
