Israeli Designer Dror Kontento Launches Eyewear Line, Shares Journey from Haredi Roots to LGBTQ+ Icon

Dror Kontento, an Israeli fashion designer known for dressing women and embracing his identity as a gay man, has launched his first eyewear collection made in Italy, marking an expansion of his design work. Kontento, who grew up in a Haredi family in Bat Yam and left the ultra-Orthodox community at 24, describes himself as far from a typical Tel Aviv gay man, emphasizing his unique style and personal journey.

His studio in South Tel Aviv is a hub of creativity and order, where annual sales events attract thousands of women. Kontento’s daughter, Shilat, 17, affectionately called Shosho, supports his work while balancing her own life between her parents’ homes. He keeps motivational notes around his workspace, a habit dating back to childhood, which help him stay focused and inspired.

Kontento’s path included a marriage within the Haredi community, fatherhood, and eventual divorce after acknowledging his sexuality. He recalls the challenges of transitioning from a religious lifestyle to embracing his identity, including early struggles with acceptance and self-expression. His iconic mustache and glasses have become his trademarks, with his eyewear line gaining recognition after a collaboration with Maccabi Healthcare Services.

His partner of seven years, Daniel Pima, manages the business side of their company, and together they maintain a drama-free, supportive home. Kontento is open about the possibility of surrogacy and expanding their family in the future. He also notes a shift in his speech patterns, sometimes using feminine language as a form of personal liberation.

Kontento’s story reflects a blend of cultural heritage, personal transformation, and creative success, highlighting his role as a bridge between diverse communities in Israel.
